Freshwater pearls are cultured inside freshwater mussels, most often in lakes and rivers rather than the sea. A technician implants a small piece of mantle tissue into the mussel, and over two to six years the animal deposits layer after layer of nacre around it. Because there is no bead nucleus in most freshwater pearls, what you hold is essentially solid nacre — one of the reasons a well-grown freshwater pearl can outlast jewelry that costs many times more.
Why freshwater pearls dominate modern jewelry
A single mussel can produce dozens of pearls per harvest, while a saltwater oyster typically produces one. That yield is exactly why freshwater pearls make affordable luxury possible: you get real, nacreous pearls in a range of shapes and colors without the saltwater premium.
The five things that decide quality
- Luster. The single most important factor. Look for sharp, bright reflections rather than a chalky glow.
- Surface. Minor pitting is normal in a natural product; look for a clean face on the pearls that sit at the front of the strand.
- Shape. Round commands the highest price, but off-round, drop, coin and baroque shapes carry far more character for the money.
- Size. Most freshwater pearls fall between 6mm and 10mm. Every extra millimetre adds years of growing time — and cost.
- Color. White, pink, peach, lavender and dyed black or gold are all common. Overtone matters more than base color.
How to buy well
Check that a strand is hand-knotted between each pearl, that the clasp is sterling silver or gold rather than plated base metal, and that the pearls are graded consistently along the whole strand. If you are buying your first piece, an 18-inch strand of 7–8mm pearls is the most versatile thing you can own.
