Pearl grades look official, but unlike diamonds there is no single governing standard. Two sellers can label very different pearls “AAA” and neither is lying. Knowing how the scales work protects you from paying for a letter.
The AAA–A scale
Most common for freshwater and Akoya pearls, this scale runs from AAA at the top to A at the bottom:
- AAA — very high luster, at least 95% clean surface, round or very consistent shape, tight matching.
- AA — high luster, roughly 90% clean, minor variation in shape and matching.
- A — noticeable blemishing, moderate luster; usually the entry tier.
Some retailers stretch the scale upward with AAAA or “AAA+” for their finest lots. That is marketing language, not a recognised grade.
The A–D (Tahitian) scale
French Polynesia grades its pearls A through D, where A is the cleanest and D shows heavy surface marking. Confusingly, an “A” Tahitian pearl is top tier, while an “A” freshwater pearl is bottom tier.
The Hanadama and GIA approaches
Hanadama is a certification for exceptional Akoya pearls issued after laboratory testing of nacre thickness and luster. GIA does not assign a single letter grade at all; it describes each of the seven value factors separately, which is the most honest way to represent a pearl.
How to read a listing
- Treat the letter as a shorthand, not a certificate.
- Look for stated specifics: millimetre size, shape description, nacre or surface notes.
- Judge luster from photos with real reflections.
- Compare within one seller’s range — their AAA versus their AA is a meaningful comparison; across brands it is not.
